# Community Climb

> A redesign of the Twitch Hype Train as a planned stream segment. Chat climbs toward goals the streamer sets, every goal unlocks a challenge she performs live, and everyone who helped keeps a reward the community drew itself.

- **Role** — Product Designer
- **Timeline** — 4 weeks, Fall 2026
- **Team** — Angelo Gonzalez, Drew Guthrie, Ryanna Jelks, Thejas Mirle
- **Skills** — Figma, User Research, Prototyping, Vibe coding
- **Surface** — Twitch mobile and Stream Manager, concept feature

## Problem

The Hype Train drives more than a third of viewer spending on Twitch and feels stale. It blends in, is hard to find on mobile, has thin rewards, can feel like begging, and only counts money.

## Research

Interviews with viewers and streamers, a short survey, and secondary reading on why people donate.

- **Why people donate** — a reaction from the streamer, social recognition, exclusive rewards, competition, milestones, supporting a creator they love
- **What makes people belong** — interacting with the streamer, community recognition, shared experiences and interests, shared goals and values
- **Insight** — each reason to donate is a reason to belong. People want to feel like a member, not a customer.

## What the Hype Train gets right

- The shared meter (milestones, shared goals)
- Levels to unlock (milestones, supporting creators)
- Top-supporter recognition (social recognition, competition, community recognition)

## The gaps

- **The streamer is missing** — it starts automatically and she can only react afterward
- **Generic rewards** — every channel unlocks the same kind of reward
- **No warning** — you cannot rally around a goal you did not know existed

## Solution

Community Climb: the streamer plans a climb ahead of time, every goal pairs a challenge she performs live with a reward only supporters earn, and fans draw the rewards (fans submit art, mods shortlist, the streamer picks, the artist gets credit).

## Persona and creator dashboard

The proposal follows one made-up streamer, HarperKeys: 21, a musician who streams piano, guitar and singing, whose chat consults the Orb of Knowledge whenever she runs out of ideas. She plans the climb in her creator dashboard: a name and length, a mystery last goal, a list of goals each pairing a hype target with a challenge and a fan-made reward, reward requests from chat she can add in one click, and a Start climb button so nothing triggers on its own.

## Journey

- Chat sees the climb coming before it starts; the last goal stays a mystery
- She starts it when the stream is ready; every sub, gift sub and Bit fills one shared bar
- She performs each challenge when it suits the stream, and the clock pauses while it is live
- At the summit everyone who helped keeps every reward; fans draw the rewards for the next climb
- **Recovery path** — if time runs out, reached goals still pay out and unreached goals carry over

## Trade-offs

- **Setup work for streamers** — chat suggestions, copying last climb's goals, default rewards
- **Fan art risks** — mods shortlist, the streamer picks, emote review still applies; artists get credit and a Creator badge

## Next steps

Talk to streamers, launch with big streamers, grow what a climb can do, then open it to every streamer. Measures: donations, chat activity, and climb usage. These are planned, not measured; the Figma proposal has not been tested with streamers.

## Reflection

- **Improved: led with the problem** — the deck opens on the research questions, where the last project's problem statement came late
- **Improved: converged instead of combining** — anything that did not answer a gap came out
- **Improved: told it through one person** — the persona and her running joke carried the argument
- **Could be better: untested** — talking to streamers comes first
- **Could be better: started from the reward** — design the experience first and let the reward follow
